Basic Life Support

Course Overview

The Basic Life Support (BLS) course by Andwise focuses on teaching critical techniques in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and emergency response for both adults and children. The course covers both theory and hands-on practice, using manikins and other training tools to simulate real-life emergency scenarios. Participants learn how to assess an emergency situation quickly, deliver chest compressions and rescue breaths, and use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to restore normal heart rhythm.

Learning Objectives

The BLS course is structured to enable participants to:

1.  Understand Basic Emergency Response Principles: Learn how to recognize signs of cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, and choking, as well as the importance of rapid intervention.

2. Perform Effective Chest Compressions: Master proper hand placement, compression depth, and rhythm to maintain effective blood flow to vital organs during CPR.

3. Administer Rescue Breaths: Practice mouth-to-mouth and mask ventilation techniques to provide oxygen to individuals in respiratory distress.

4. Use an AED Safely: Learn to operate an Automated External Defibrillator, including recognizing when to use it, attaching pads correctly, and delivering a shock.

5. Respond to Choking: Understand techniques to relieve airway obstructions in infants, children, and adults.

6. Coordinate as a Team: Work on communication and coordination skills to optimize responses during multi-rescuer situations.

Course Modules

1. Introduction to Basic Life Support

   - Explanation of BLS and why it’s crucial.

   - Overview of the importance of time and response rate in emergencies.

2. Initial Assessment and Scene Safety

   - How to quickly assess the environment for safety.

   - Steps for evaluating the condition of the individual in need and deciding on the appropriate intervention.

3. High-Quality CPR Techniques

   - Step-by-step instructions on chest compressions, including proper hand placement, depth, and rhythm (100–120 compressions per minute).

   - Realistic practice on adult and child manikins for skill-building and confidence.

4. Rescue Breathing and Ventilation

   - Instructions on providing effective rescue breaths and ensuring adequate ventilation.

   - Use of face masks and other protective devices during rescue breaths for safe intervention.

5. AED Usage and Protocol

   - Instruction on using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for victims of sudden cardiac arrest.

   - Hands-on practice with AED trainers to build familiarity with the process of applying pads, analyzing heart rhythm, and administering shocks if necessary.

6. Relieving Choking (Heimlich Maneuver)

   - Practice on techniques to relieve choking in adults, children, and infants.

   - Explanation of the Heimlich maneuver and modifications based on age and physical characteristics.

7. Team-Based Resuscitation

   - Practice working in teams, emphasizing clear communication and effective coordination to improve response time.

   - Roles and responsibilities during team-based resuscitation, simulating real-world emergency situations where multiple rescuers may be present.

8. Scenario-Based Training and Assessment

   - Realistic scenarios presented to participants to test their skills in CPR, AED use, and response to choking.

   - Instructor feedback and final assessment to ensure each participant can perform the skills confidently and effectively.

Course Duration and Format

The Andwise BLS course typically lasts between 4-6 hours, depending on group size and individual participant needs. The training combines interactive lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practice to ensure participants feel prepared to respond to emergencies. Courses are available both in-person and through online blended formats where initial theory can be covered online, followed by in-person practical sessions.

Certification and Assessment

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from Andwise Health Services Africa, which is valid for two years. Certification requires passing a practical skills assessment where participants demonstrate their CPR and AED abilities in a controlled setting.
